The Grammys is much anticipated for it honors the music industry’s best and brightest, and for fashionistas, this, as with other big awards ceremony, is also a great way to spot the stand-out from the crowd. In the recent celebrations, one particularly got everyone talking: Billy Porter.
The theater actor was a scene-stealer and anyone who watched the Grammys know that it was because of the bling he sported from head to toe. The 50-year-old was literally brilliant and it became definitely hard to miss his entrance because as camera flashes hit him, he shone even brighter.
The Pose celeb arrived on the red carpet wearing a Scott Studenberg creation: a Baja East blue jumpsuit, which seemed to be alive, thanks to the crystal fringe at the feet that moved as he walked. He also sported a matching cropped jacket and more importantly, an oversized hat that apparently hid a magical trick.
Billy’s headwear had crystalline fringes that flowed down the sides, but wait, it simply wasn’t that. It also served as a privacy blanket for the man because like a curtain, it closes with only a touch of a button.
The audacious dresser quipped on Twitter that the curtain closes whenever someone annoys him. Billy showcased what it can do on the red carpet and once the fringes opened, it revealed his glamorous metallic look.
The spectacular hat was made by Sarah Sokol, a milliner to celebrities like Emilia Clarke, Cardi B, and Janelle Monae. The brains behind the moving piece was Smooth Technology, whose hardware techs have been used at festivals and concerts.
Apparently, the same tech company was one of those responsible for Janelle’s Met Gala look last year, so that was what linked them to the milliner. The result was nothing short of perfect: a masterpiece that stopped the crowd and wowed fashion gurus.
Billy’s stylist Sam Ratelle said that the moving headwear was inspired by singer Billie Eilish’s American Music Awards bedazzled bonnet. He explained that he was also the one holding the remote control and whenever the star signals him, he closes the fringes.
Overall, Billy’s look had 70,000 crystals that were manually placed on the outfit. Outrageous, right?
However, if you’re a big fan of the Like A Boss star, you’ll remember that his Critic’s Choice Award outfit was as outrageous as this blue ensemble.
