It doesn’t take a genius to see that Prince Charles isn’t very close with his sons, William and Harry. But Harry and Meghan’s revelations in the tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired on March 7, 2021, took the father-son distance equation to a whole new level.
During the interview, Prince Harry revealed that after he and his wife announced their decision to step back from their royal duties in January 2020, his father, Prince Charles, stopped taking his calls.
Now when such a controversial ‘accusation’ was hurled at the senior Prince, a reaction was only expected. Thus, on March 11, 2021, Prince Williams stated that he’s looking forward to talking with his brother. And knowing that William is a man of his words, he and his father did speak to Harry the following weekend.
After the conversation, a palace source revealed that Prince Charles’s relationship with his sons has been complex for years. But why is it so? Why are there so many cracks in the royal family? Join us as we try to find out.
The differences between Prince Charles and his sons
As any royal follower would assume, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s painful divorce played a major role in complicating the relationship between the father and the sons. But according to source, the fact that Prince Charles controls the money in the family makes the problems even more complex.
Prince Charles is both Prince Harry and William’s father and boss. He’s the one who pays for their office and living expenses; so naturally, the relationship will have its odds. Prince Charles’ Duchy of Cornwall estate earns a yearly profit of approximately $30 million from which he pays his own office expenses as well as that of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s. Earlier he was funding Harry and Meghan’s offices too.

While talking to Oprah Winfrey, Harry spoke about how his family cut him off financially in 2020, a few days after the couple announced abdicating the royal titles and becoming economically self-sufficient. If it wasn’t for the funds left by Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, Harry and his family wouldn’t have been able to move to California.
The royal’s reaction to Harry and Meghan’s interview
Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah shocked everyone (to say the least), including the royal family. After it aired, the Buckingham Palace released a statement on March 9, 2021, sharing its concerns for Harry and Meghan. It stated that the family was sad to hear about the challenges the couple faced and confirmed that the issues relating to racial discrimination would be addressed privately by the family. Moreover, the Queen assured people that Harry, Meghan, and Archie would always be loved.

Quite opposite to the Palace’s calm and measured response, Prince William completely disagreed with Meghan’s comments in the interview that her son faced racial discrimination before birth.
During a school visit in East London with Kate Middleton, William defended the royal family by saying that they weren’t racists.
